Overview
Nyerere National Park is one of Africa’s largest protected wildlife areas and one of Tanzania’s newest national parks, created from part of the historic Selous Game Reserve. Covering more than 30,000 square kilometers, the park offers vast untouched wilderness, diverse ecosystems, and remarkable wildlife experiences far from crowded tourist routes.
The park is centered around the magnificent Rufiji River, Tanzania’s largest river, which creates a network of channels, lakes, and wetlands supporting a rich variety of wildlife. Visitors can experience unique boat safaris, where they can observe hippos, crocodiles, elephants, waterbirds, and other animals from the water—an experience rarely available in other Tanzanian parks.
Game drives and walking safaris provide opportunities to encounter lions, leopards, elephants, buffaloes, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, African wild dogs, and hundreds of bird species.
